“Would you prefer wine, Mia?”
“If you like,” she answered, listless now.
“We’ve been saving this up,” he told her.
“What? Oh, then not on my account.”
Feeling thwarted, he reached across for the jug of water. Magnus rarely drank anything else and, even when he did, there was always some close by. He claimed it rejuvenated him and gave him strength now he was in his forties.
“Here,” he said. “Help yourself.” When she did not move, he added, less than patiently, “It’s water.”
