Steeling herself mentally as best she could, Halle once more forced her heavy eyes fully open. She squinted against the dim, gloomy lighting, cautiously taking in her immediate surroundings. The small room was barely furnished, just a rickety metal-frame cot with dingy, worn linens, a dented metal chair, scuffed table, and one curtained window with smeary glass that let in only faint wisps of sunlight. The dreary bleakness of the enclosed space only amplified Halle’s escalating feelings of unease.
