Moe was there, having seemingly melted out of the shadows to lean against a bookshelf, his massive arms crossed, his presence a silent, immovable object.
“Levi,” Carlos said, his tone not unfriendly, but devoid of the warmth he’d shown Ethel earlier. This was the leader, the strategist, the protector. “Have a seat.”
Levi sat, perching on the very edge of the chair, his back straight. The blush was gone, replaced by a wary alertness.
“Ethel has told me a great deal about you,” Carlos began, steepling his fingers. “About your skills. Your resourcefulness. And your… attitude.”
