I tell him “You are taking time this time, Ric. Can you find him or do I need to ask Maliah’s grandma for help finding someone?” “Her grandmother? What does she know about hunting rats?” Ric's voice was forced as he spoke and I knew he felt offended that I was insinuating he was inefficient and he hated that more than anything else. “Maliah is an Ishii, man.” I confessed, running my hand down my face. “A fucking what now?” He scoffed but I could tell he was amused. “I know” I laughed “Crazy, right? After telling myself you’ll be the only crime-related asshole I’ll ever acquaint myself with”

This is pure fiction and does not depict the actions of any religious group. It's white everywhere. My head is hurting. My foggy brain can't even think of why I'm here. What is going on? "Mali...my name is Mali..." I managed to force that before everything went blank again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I woke up but this time my vision was clear and I felt much better, the pain was gone, I felt lightheaded though, and very hungry. I sat up and looked around me. I was in the same room but the huge man was nowhere to be found. I was alone and hungry. Very hungry. I got out of bed but sat right back when it felt like the earth was spinning. I don't even know where I am. I need to find my phone too, I remember that it was the only thing I was holding when I left...

Malaika was not satisfied, looking at the elves lying on the ground, barely breathing. She held her dagger and slashed the throat of every elf despite their pleading. The snow turned blue as everyone bathed their blood. “Now, let me do the same.” Malaika knelt and plunged the dagger into Fashi’s chest before she sliced his neck. Then she went back to Helga. Her eyes were starting to go back to normal, but her tears kept cascading down. She broke the water bubble and sat beside her. “I’m sorry….” She touched Helga’s cheek and covered her eyes to close them. But Malaika’s vision darkened. She was consumed by pain and fury that she wept with so much guilt.

Kieran replied, adjusting his bag as it was tilting to one side. They walked to the bike rack; Kieran locked his up and boarded the train once it arrived. The steady hum of the tracks filled the short silences between their words. Halfway through the ride, the train stopped at a train station, and someone stepped into their mostly empty carriage. It was Malen. She spotted them instantly and offered a small wave. They waved back. Her hands began to move. Her fingers shaped the air with practised ease, her thumb brushing under her chin in a flick, then her hands spreading outward in a slight arc: “Are you okay?”

And if he doesn’t come back here, then what awaits him? There’s no answer that doesn’t feel like falling. Near the stables, Mala is saying goodbye to her mother. Edith’s eyes shine with tears she pretends not to shed, and Mala laughs. That dry, knowing laugh that makes everything around her feel less heavy than it is. I watch her with a strange sense of awe. “You’ll be fine,” she says, with that lazy drawl that makes it sound like nothing matters at all. “It’s not like I’m dying, Ma.”
