“Mr. Smith,” she said, startled. “What brings you here?”
“Good afternoon, Maria,” Damien greeted politely. “I was hoping to see Blaire. Is she home?”
Maria stepped aside, still stunned. “Yes, come in.”
Damien walked in, the sound of cheerful conversation growing louder as he entered the living room. His eyes immediately fell on Blaire, who was sitting on the couch, laughing with Fred. He was holding a stuffed animal, was mid-sentence, his expression warm and friendly.
