I searched their faces for something real some spark, some private warmth and found almost nothing. They looked like two people completing a transaction. The realization sat cold in my stomach. My brothers look up instantly, alert, hands flexing like they feel it too the shift in air, the warning in my voice. I crouch beside the bed, careful, slow. I don’t touch her. I don’t need to. The mark is burned into my memory already. Three interlocking lines. A broken circle. And a slash through the center. The world tilts. “No,” I whisper.
