We walked down the sterile, fluorescent-lit hallway toward the chief doctor’s office. I knocked once and pushed the door open. The doctor was hunched over his desk, his glasses perched on the bridge of his nose as he flipped through a stack of thick medical files. He looked up, his face breaking into a professional, respectful mask when he saw me. He stood up, and we shared a firm handshake.
