An average-heighted man with thick red hair and freckles on both sides of his face is sitting on a stack of tires. He leans his both hands on a walking stick as I approach him. I see the luggage open in front of him and traces of white powder on top of his nostrils. I'm sure as hell that he's had a good sniff. At this state, he can do anything. So I keep my distance. "I can assure you she'll go for nothing less than twenty grands," the Master says again, taking another sniff on a small stool beside him. “No one can be worth that amount,” I reply, my eyes fixed on the luggage.

Three bedrooms. One of them had been transformed into a gym with a treadmill and a few other workout equipment. Although, judging by how new most of the stuff was, it didn't look like she used the room a lot. The other one had a bed and a mattress. Nothing else. The master bedroom must have been where Natalia spent most of her time. Everything was carefully picked. The bedding included plush throws, knit blankets, and pillows in shades of white, cream, and soft taupe. Floor-to-ceiling drapes in a matching beige shade framed sheer white curtains and a large rug covered the floor.

Predictable. I remembered how the space used to feel: suffocating with mold, the floors warped, the pantry collapsing in on itself. Now, it whispered nothing but efficiency. Even the lighting had been redone, motion-sensor lights that could shift from ambient to tactical with a voice command. In the master bedroom, I stood at the foot of the bed. The space was bathed in golden evening light. I opened the safe again, watched it read my eye, then slide open with a hiss. Flawless.

"I took a chance. Julia looked over my shoulder, and waved her body in favor of music, approaching. "I know a lot about your master," she said, closing her eyes. "He used to come here with his wife, and when she died, he cut off any contact with the club. Until Madame Tracey called him to be his right arm, and that gave him space for him to take other subs.
