The man with the launcher misfired, the missile veering off-course and exploding into the hill. Seraphina slid across the seat, seized Lucien’s backup pistol, and popped up just long enough to tag the third attacker’s leg.

He pulled the trigger. The gunshot echoed like a final judgment. Warren Blackwell’s reign ended in fire and blood. Even as Kane stood over Warren’s corpse, Matteo knelt beside Lucien, pressing his hands desperately against the wound in his chest. Blood seeped through his fingers, staining the floor. “Stay with me!” Matteo roared. “Don’t you dare leave us!” Rem, who had stood frozen at the doorway, finally raised his weapon. His shot struck Warren’s corpse just a second too late — a useless echo of vengeance. But it mattered. To him, it mattered. His sister’s tormentor was gone.

Matteo’s shot had missed its mark, hitting Lucca’s right shoulder instead, rendering his gun hand useless. Lucca lay among the shards, gasping for air, eyes hollow, staring at the ceiling. “Why… didn’t you just kill me?” Matteo lowered his weapon, stepping forward to drape an arm around my shoulder.

It was at the gates of Pines Ridge and Matthew's men arrived quickly. The man, however, wasn't scared at all, but put his hand out to Serena, "Serena, come here." Serena looks down, pulls out the gun Matthew is holding and aims it at him. "You're going to kill me?" There was no rise or fall in his voice, just such a simple statement. "Bang!" Answering him was one of Serena's bullets. The man was shot in the shoulder and looked up at her.

He lunged toward Beau, closing the distance fast, like he could end this before Beau recovered. I couldn’t stop shaking. I could only watch. But as Mattias got near…just close enough to strike…Beau spun his body and fired again. “Bang.” The shot hit Mattias with brutal finality. He jerked like someone had yanked a rope tied to his spine. Then he crumpled to the floor. Beau’s breath came in ragged gasps. His face tightened with pain, but his eyes stayed locked on Mattias, cold and unblinking.
