She stepped back, a cruel, mocking smile on her face as Rico stumbled, his hands clutching the wounds in his abdomen.
"You were always my favorite, Rico," Nara whispered.
"So dependable. So easy to predict."
She raised the 9mm and fired twice, point-blank, into his chest.
Rico’s head snapped back. He hit the floor with a thud that felt like an earthquake. He looked at me, his golden eyes wide, a single, bloody hand reaching out toward me before his arm went limp.
"NO!" I shrieked, the sound tearing from my lungs.
Nara didn't look at the body. She turned toward the door, her ears twitching. Above us, the sounds of the pack were erupting.
