##Chapter 046 ##The Pledge of the Mother The Hollow Den breathed around me like a living creature. Every drip of water sliding down its stone walls, every flicker of moonlight through cracks above, seemed amplified inside my chest. After the marks had seared across my abdomen, after the Matrons had spoken with voices both blessing and curse, I believed nothing else could shake me. I was wrong. As silence stretched, Oya’s gaze weighed on me—not just her eyes, but the ghosts of all the women before me she seemed to carry in them. And in that moment, the truth struck. There was no going back.

Lea was still silent, and Matthew was continuously questioning her, shaking her vigorously. Lea felt severe pain in her head while she could hear a voice constantly saying, " Kill him; he's your enemy." Lea couldn't bear it anymore, and she screamed, " Stop it...stop it!" She then took out a silver knife and pierced it directly into Matthew's heart. She didn't stop at one time. She took out the knife and struck it again, and again and again. Matthew screamed in pain and stared at Lea, bewildered. The shock was so deep that an experienced, skilled fighter like him did not think of defending himself. Writing it, I wanted you to really feel Ricardo’s panic, his rage, and that overwhelming sense of helplessness when the people we love are in danger. And then… Matteo. Oh, Matteo. He’s dark, cunning, and completely unpredictable, isn’t he? I love exploring these dangerous, twisted dynamics because it keeps the story alive and the tension unbearable in the best way. Mateo's pov They all offered me appealing gazes but I knew that was a mask underneath their menacing looks. It was safe to say that no one in the mafia could trust each other but with the way things were moving, my height of paranoia would stretch to its limit and my patience was wearing thin. “Matteo has delivered the painting… but uh, is it safe here now that girl is around?” Angelou linked his fingers together. My legs felt weak from the incident earlier and the tightness in my chest was still present. But I ignored that, tossed myself on the bed and opened my phone. Being lonely and bullied for a long time, reading novels was a big part of my life and my only comfort. I need some joy to counteract today’s disaster. Mateo’s grin shriveled and died on his face. “What,” Mateo asked, defensively. “This is Riley? You didn’t tell me your beta is a girl.” Mateo eyed her appreciatively. “Woman,” Kadeem corrected automatically, but he was hardly paying attention anymore. The amount of anxiety coming off his beta was overwhelming him. Riley narrowed her eyes at Mateo. “Who the fuck are you,” she asked, scowling. Mateo opened his mouth. “Don’t answer that,” Riley said, cutting him off. “That was rhetorical, asshat.”
