Its body was black and looked like it was covered with armor made of metal. "Beast!" Chase growled, swinging the blade in his hand. It shone with brilliant blade intent that shot right through the ferocious beast's brain. "Huh? There's a monster pill inside the ferocious beast?" Chase's eyes brightened. He searched the beast and grabbed a monster core. Just as he was about to crush it, his ears caught a sound.

Sweat dripped from his brow, his heart pounding in his chest as he navigated the deadly gauntlet. Emerging from the corridor, he faced the final challenge: a maze of swinging axes and rotating blades. The axes were massive, each swing accompanied by a bone-chilling whoosh. The rotating blades moved in erratic patterns, their edges catching the light in deadly flashes. Dragonflies with wingspans like gliders. The hyper-growth hadn't just affected the plants; it had affected the bugs that ate them. "They're attacking the metal!" Silas observed. "They sense the star-metal in the engine blocks!" "Leo!" I shouted. Leo was in the jeep ahead of us. He stood up in the passenger seat.

As we crested the final ridge overlooking the crater, I saw them. ​The Harvester infantry. They weren’t machines, and they weren’t men. Her boots hit a narrow strip of safe floor with the lightness of someone who’d done this a hundred times. Blood slicked one of her hands already—the beast fight’s leftovers, not hers—but it moved with her as if it knew where she wanted it. It clung to the metal segments of her weapon, darkening them, then slithered down and along the ground in a thin, sinful trail. Every place that trail touched, the stone darkened. Hazards grew teeth. A row of small blades sprouted from what had been neutral floor, rising just high enough to shred ankles if you weren’t watching.
