I started walking. Each step felt like moving toward something, not escaping anything. Halfway down, Damien came toward me and stopped, offering his hand without pulling me forward.
“You came,” I said.
“I said I would meet you,” he replied.
I took his hand, and we walked the rest of the way together.
At the front, he asked whether I was still certain about walking the first half alone.
“Yes,” I said. “I need to know I can reach the middle by myself. I also need to know I do not have to cross the rest alone.”
