I thought for a moment, then said, “We’re trying. That’s enough for now.” He reached for my hand. I didn’t pull away this time. We sat like that for a long while, watching the sunlight fade. Then, calmly, I said, “You know what I realized?” “What?” “No matter how many times we break, somehow we always find our way back.” He smiled, a small, broken smile. “Maybe that’s what love really is.” I leaned my head on his shoulder. “Maybe.” “Can I ask something?” he murmured.

I stand there and I listen to every second of it and I do not go back in. This is what love looks like when you’ve broken it and you’re trying to earn it back. You stand in the hallway. You wait. You don’t leave, but you don’t go in. You just stay.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
