It hit me that long before I had become his kept woman, he had been secretly in love with me. He even moved Ricky's ashes to the most scenic cemetery, designed the headstone himself, and left fresh white lilies there every day. Damien did everything he could to make amends. The man I had known, all sharp edges and cold fury, was gone. In front of me, he was gentle and careful, his eyes pleading like a lost dog finally welcomed home. And still, my heart felt like a barren desert where nothing could ever grow again. Then, Chloe showed up.
