She said not even turning around. I stuck my tongue out childishly.

Shirley's POV The supermarket was filled with the scent of pine-scented candles, artificial snowflakes taped to every glass pane, and endless rows of Christmas-themed everything. Abby tugged on my coat, pointing excitedly at the peppermint bark display. "Can we get this for William?" she asked. "He gave me marshmallows last time." I smiled and nodded. "Of course."

The parade wasn’t long. After a few more floats, some horses, a couple of clowns, and some classic cars, Santa was spotted coming around the corner. Lorelei and Anson giggled and shouted, jumping up and down. All along the sidewalk, children clapped and waved at the big man, some even shouting their Christmas wishes.

"Are you sure you're okay with this?" Jaxon said low and careful from his place at the door to the living room, his hand resting on the frame. His eyes were on me, like he was trying to gauge whether I meant it when I said everything was fine. I stood at the window, staring out as snow fell in languid flakes, casting a pale luminance over everything in sight. Christmas was looming, yet somehow, it didn't feel quite as festively joyful as it had other years.

Finally, the car stopped at a park. With Christmas trees and lights all over the place. So many fun activities are going on. It was snowing. I came down and started jumping, and the loud Christmas music made it more fun. “Merry Christmas!” I screamed. Did he just smile? Zayne was watching me play around. I dragged him into the circle and made him jump with me. This felt so good. “Here, have this jacket. It is very cold.” He removed his jacket and gave it to me, but I was finding it difficult to put it on because of the gloves on my hands.

All my friends would be so excited for Christmas and they all told me how they stayed up late so that they could meet Santa, but not me. Nope, I stayed awake to try and capture the creep sneaking into my house once a year." As soon as I finish that sentence, a roar of laughter emits from all three of them.

So no Scooby-Doo mysteries were solved here. "You're right." Drunko leaned into my space, specifically in the "your too close zone" as he chugged some drink that smelled like pure gasoline. He belched, obnoxiously loud and right in my face. The nerve of some people's children… "Hey, dude." Do not scissor-kick this dingus in the face, self, don't do it! "You mind easing back some? Trying to strip here." My complaint fell on dumb drunk deaf ears: "Hey you, elf chick, do some magic or something! Do a spell!"
