Her diaphragm spasmed as she clutched her bruised throat. "Flank!" I ordered. I drew my sword. The steel sang against the scabbard—a long, rising note. "Viggo, left! Wolfy, high ground! Keep his heart rate spiked!" We didn't wait for his recovery. We swarmed. Viggo roared—a guttural, subsonic vibration felt in my ribs. He leaped over the altar, his claws extending from his nail beds with a stinging heat. He swiped at Nergal’s faceplate. Sparks showered, smelling of ozone and scorched alloy. Wolfy slid across the ice-slicked stone, his kinetic pistol clicking in a rapid staccato. He fired into the joints, the projectiles impacting the servos with a series of sharp, metallic snaps.

But unfortunately, he'll die by my hands tonight. Blade howls before the mansion and rapidly jumps over the fence. He attacks the first set of guardsmen standing by the entrance. My wolf tears into their souls, ripping it out with his maw and sharp fangs. Cries of pain assail the air. I kill as I aim for the entrance but more men attack. Gunshots ring out and I duck, restrategizing as I attack. The onslaught is bloody. Bones crunch under my fangs. Skin rips under my claws.

Ronan lifted up his staff, the carved wolf head pointed directly at me. “Your father bled for this pack,” he said, his tone cold. “Now you will do the same…. tonight.” I stepped forward, with my chin high. “Then give me the blade.” A murmur rippled through the chamber. He expected me to hesitate, to stall. I didn’t give him that. One of the guards brought it and deep down inside of me, I could sense my own fear. The blade was curved, silver-etched with moon symbols that were visible on its edges. My wolf snarled under my skin.

They just hung in the air. Dying. Then, like a delayed thunderclap, they hit. A low, involuntary growl rumbled deep in my chest. My wolf, Blade, who had been a sullen, angry shadow since the woods, surged forward. Dying? “What are you talking about?” My voice was rough.

The earth actually trembled, and Blade’s wolf instinctively shifted its weight, claws digging deeper as if bracing against something inevitable. Scarlet clutched Ronan tighter where she knelt behind them, her breath stuck in her throat. Blade snarled first, saliva dripping from his fangs. "You think you’re bigger than me?" his wolf sneered through the air. Grey didn’t answer, he stepped forward once. The trees groaned. Blade attacked. He launched himself like a missile, claws aimed straight for Grey’s throat, jaws wide, teeth flashing silver under moonlight. He was fast, his rage fueling every movement. He struck Grey’s shoulder hard enough to make fur tear and blood spray.

Rhaedon spun, jaws snapping at another's leg, biting through muscle and tendon with a wet rip. I moved with them, blade flashing. A rebel wolf lunged low, I drove the point into its eye socket, the blade grating against bone before it slumped. The power made my strikes precise, almost effortless, but I felt the burn starting, a deep ache in my core as the merge strained our souls.

“Not scavengers. Engineers.” Blade scanned the implants with his wrist reader. “No local signature. This tech’s not ours, not any pack’s. Looks… military.” “Black Sun?” I asked. He hesitated. “Their old design language, yeah—but upgraded. Cleaner. Smarter.” Ghost grimaced. “Guess someone picked up their scraps after we burned them down.” I leaned closer to the dying wolf. Its eye flickered—one blue, one red. For a heartbeat, I thought I saw recognition there. Then its jaw opened in a twitching rictus, and the voice that came out wasn’t its own.
