After downing three more drinks in five minutes, Wei was a bit wobbly as Dane led him outside onto the deck, where they were alone. “I need to know the real reason Gamma Sam was discharged from the army, and you’re going to tell me,” he demanded. “I-I can’t betray Sam’s trust,” Wei replied, swaying slightly now the cold night air was hitting his face. Dane leant in and menacingly stood over Wei, his large frame solid and intimidating.

The silence that followed the carnage was broken only by the beast’s heavy, guttural breathing. Sam, still in his monumental hybrid form, returned to the cabin through the gaping hole in the wall. He stopped in front of Adreas, who was huddled against the fireplace corner, the silver knife still gripped tightly in his trembling hand. The gold in Sam’s eyes softened, the fury slowly receding to make way for protective desperation.
