But at this point I'd long decided that I would rather die than let Michael see how petrified I was.

After helping him onto the sofa, Sadie immediately turned to Scarlett, her voice sharp with accusation. "Scarlett, what are you doing? How can you treat Dad like this?" Scarlett ignored her completely. Her eyes were fixed on Michael. He was curled up on the ground, trembling violently, his body covered in wounds. He looked like he was on the verge of collapse.
