The moment the call disconnected, I sat there gripping my phone, staring at the blank screen like it held the answer to why my chest felt so tight.
Something was going on with Scarlett. I wasn’t just guessing, I knew. The hesitation in her voice, the way she tried too hard to sound indifferent, the way she cut the call too fast.
And then there was that damn power outage.
I didn’t know why, but the moment she had said it, something in my mind had snapped into place.
