She set it down. She looked at the window. The January morning was fully itself now — cold and clear and specific, the ridge doing its ridge thing above the valley, the territory below in its winter frequency. She was in the middle of something. She always would be. The middle was everything. The middle was this. End of Chapter Twenty-Six.

Even the smallest piece of fabric seemed to cling uncomfortably to my skin. Unable to resist the pull of what I was witnessing, I continued watching for a long time, my strength gradually draining away until I could no longer support myself. I slid to the floor, overcome. The heat of my breath filled the room, thickening the air with a charged energy I couldn't ignore. To be honest, I never expected my new tenant, Antonio Gomez, to be this captivating. The young woman he was with couldn't seem to keep up with him, but for someone like me—more experienced and mature—it only made me wish I could be in her place.

Angeline felt incapable of loving someone again. Her heart harbored only deep-seated hatred. "Hatred, huh?" A voice echoed from the doorway. Angeline turned her head. She saw an elderly gentleman standing at the door. He was about Robert's age. His eyes sparkled with kindness. He held a tray with a pot of chamomile tea. She recognized him. He seemed to be the Lawson family's retired butler. She recalled Sean's assistant, Taylor, had mentioned that Paul Danvers, the retired butler, had been managing a farm for Robert on the outskirts of Krontos for many years.

The hopeful one that was naïve enough to believe in fairytales, and now the one who can’t feel anything at all. Chris sighs, peeking in the crack through the door, “Rose,” he grumbled, rolling his eyes, “Sorry. Hard to get used to. I’m going into town. Need anything?” The town was about thirty minutes away, and Chris drives into it twice a week. The surrounding area is mostly Amish families who don’t use the internet. The few store owners and older folk that live in the outskirts of the town keep to themselves. They’ve asked Chris a few questions, but nothing that seemed like they had anything to do with James, so he doesn’t mind having short conversations.

The children playing judge and lawyer laughed manically as the rat screamed, the air filling with the nauseating stench of scorched flesh. The coachman cracked his long whip, and the hired carriage bearing the new guest began to move again. Inside the window, a pair of green eyes watched silently. Her gaze swept over the beggars crawling by the roadside, the vagrants rummaging through trash, the urchins with their cruel smiles, and the security officer weighing his coin purse as he walked toward the next shop. The carriage rattled as it turned the corner.

“Of course I do, dear. You helped me rebuild the town after the last collapse. You don’t remember?” Grayson frowned. “We’ve never been here.” The woman tilted her head, almost pitying. “Oh, you have. Just not yet.” Inside the woman’s home, the air smelled of herbs and smoke. The furniture looked handmade, patched from scrap wood. A fire crackled in the hearth, though no visible fuel burned in it, just glowing stones. She introduced herself as Mara, one of the “keepers” of what she called the Town of Between. Lira folded her arms, eyes scanning the strange runes etched into the walls. “Between what?”

The western suburbs of Setrie city is a relatively unspoiled land, the rusticity of this place comes from the lavender gardens, tea hills, and the conservation of animals and plants. Earl William's mansion was built many years ago, it is located next to a lavender garden in full bloom. Ever since Adela set foot in this land, she has felt in love with the atmosphere here. Oh, the air is so fresh, so light, and life is so easy to breathe.

River Black House Eventide was a sprawling manor surrounded by a wrought iron fence dripping with crimson roses. Four stories and made of marble, it was the most beautiful building she’d ever seen in person. It did look like a prince would live there. Something about it was sad too, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. Most of the windows were dark, heavy curtains drawn. The gardens in the courtyard were a little overgrown. It looked to be a grand place forgotten. She supposed that’s what made it sad.
