The cold hit me like a slap to the face, but I didn’t slow down. Mikey was already being loaded into a black SUV by one of Rachel’s men. "Oliver, the car!" I shouted, pointing toward the vehicle at the far end of the lot. Oliver sprinted ahead, moving faster than I thought possible. He reached the SUV just as the door slammed shut, yanking it open before the driver could pull away. With one swift motion, he pulled Mikey out and cradled him protectively, glaring at the henchman, who looked as if he was about to protest.

He darted over to a more abandoned area of the park and decided to find a way to go around and block off Mikey's route. Everything was going fine until Mikey headed toward a lake. Mikey raced straight towards the water; Keven was fast on his heels. At the last second, Mikey turned, but Keven, who had been going faster plunged headfirst into the lake. After only a second, Keven popped up out of the water and climbed out onto the grass, soaked but not harmed. Alec continued to track the child but lost sight of Mikey when he heard Keven let out a terrified shout. "Oh my God!"

A few chuckles followed, though Stryker only growled, earning more laughter. “Interesting color shift,” Mikan observed, his tone sharpening as the hatchling’s scales reverted to blue and red. His eyes narrowed in study. After several tense seconds, Mikan looked at Brie. “Is he speaking to you through telepathy?” Brie nodded slowly. “He knows who I am, Trace as well, and Rodic.” “That’s impossible,” Daxen said, stepping closer to examine the hatchling. But before anyone could react, the small dragon shuddered and melted into a pool of shimmering blue liquid.

He smiled at me, and for the first time, I felt like I wasn’t just Zack’s little sister tagging along. I waved my hands in front of me, shaking my head. “It’s no big deal,” I said, smiling back at him. “Well, I’m Mikey, and that’s Austin,” he pointed to the guy who had kicked Zack, “and James,” he said, motioning toward the quieter boy standing beside him. James gave me a small nod, not much for words, it seemed.
