As the afternoon faded into gold, Mira and Milo argued over who could skip stones farther across the lake. Mira went first, her stone bouncing three times before sinking. “Ha!” she cheered. “Beat that.” Milo crouched, taking his turn. His stone skimmed five perfect skips before vanishing beneath the water. “Show-off,” Mira said, tossing a pebble at him. He has been away for the past two hours for his routine exercise and early morning patrol. He has just gotten back. “Well, from what you can see, Kayola is fine, but I am not” Wanda complains and Milos laughs out loud, then he goes to sit beside her. “What’s the problem, baby?” He asks, hugging her with one strong arm. “Dad, I want to play up there,” she points at the ceiling.

I play sometimes. Mommy says I’m fast. Like you.”

“How long have you been standing there?" “Not very long. I just didn't want to disturb your thinking. Is everything okay?” Well, she was going to be Luna and she and Milo had already formed a bond. “It’s Milo.” “What about him? Is he okay?" I smiled at her eagerness. “Yes, he's okay.
