Mine was different, it was like I was dreaming, but not dreaming at the same time, it feels like I was dreaming of myself, and at the same time, it was not me at all. Ugh! This is so confusing. I leaned back in the chair, rubbing my eyes. My head was starting to ache from all the reading. Maybe I’m overthinking it. Sigh. Perhaps it’s really just a silly dream. I closed the book I’m reading, about to take a quick nap when suddenly gust of wind brushed past me. I froze. My hair moved slightly from the force, and the papers I had been reading scattered across the table. “What the…” I whispered under my breath.

Just the soft rustle of pages and the comforting scent of old books. Only in stories, he thought, could he travel across oceans, through time, into the hearts of strangers without moving an inch, without lifting a finger. It was within ink and parchment that he found the most vivid adventures. Adventures that never asked him to sacrifice his stillness in exchange for wonder. And so, with his limbs weary but his mind slowly awakening, Arnav reached for a book. The kind of book that didn’t just pass the time, but gently stitched a man back together.

With a deep breath, she heads out the door, leaving me alone in the quiet house. To pass the time and distract myself from thoughts of Noland, I decide to explore the house further. After wandering down the hall, I come across a small library, its walls lined with shelves overflowing with books. The scent of old paper and leather bindings fills the air, calming my racing thoughts. I run my fingers along the spines of the books, their titles whispering stories of love, loss, and adventure.

The only noise came from outside the windows, guards walking the perimeter and issuing orders to those beneath them. I pulled a chair closer to one of the tables near the tall window and opened the book I had just finished reading earlier that morning. I had already read the same page three times, yet I still could not remember a single word of it. My mind kept drifting. Sometimes it drifted to memories I wished would stay buried. Other times it drifted to questions I did not want to answer. And lately, it drifted to Vincent. I closed the book slowly and pressed my fingers against the page. Why was it suddenly hard to think of him the way I always had?

It was so bad, I completely lost my train of thought and had to end the meeting early. I'm being completely ridiculous and this needs to stop. That’s why as soon as I come back to my apartment, I get ready to do what I always do when I'm spiraling and I want to distract myself. I open a new book, make some tea and read about a new fictional world where everything is easy, men aren’t evil psychopaths and there are no bad consequences to pursuing love. But somewhere between chapter seven and eight, I let my mind go rogue for just a second. So it casts Bram Kent as the leading male. Protective, possessive and crazy with want.

Stephanie's POV: I absentmindedly circled my pen over the page of my notebook, the ink bleeding into the paper in uneven spirals. My head was eerily quiet, yet the silence wasn’t comforting. The only noise was the relentless stream of thoughts swirling in my mind. They weren’t chaotic, but they were persistent, like a low hum that refused to fade.

CHAPTER 148 ROWAN I was curled up in the window seat of the small library alcove, the afternoon sun warming my back as I turned the pages of an old adventure book. The story was simple and comforting, full of brave heroes and quiet moments between battles, and for a little while it helped me forget the strange dreams that had been pulling at me lately. My fingers traced the words slowly, and I let myself sink deeper into the tale, breathing in the faint smell of old paper and ink.

The softness of each page with its hardened exterior sent a warmth through my body that no human could ever provide me. It’s been so long since I was able to actually hold a book like this in my hands; the astronomy book that Bob had given me to study was alright. It was better than nothing, but it didn’t give me that same sense of purpose and mystery as a book with a story does. Transporting my brain somewhere different; somewhere peaceful; somewhere that change is possible, and no dream is too big.

I need to take time. I remember the small room I entered last time. I slowly opened the door and turned on the lampshade. The books on the table were still scattered. I tried to look and read each one of them. These are all interesting books. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and a lot more. I tried to find something that might help me, but I found nothing.
