Mara stepped closer. She looked down at me, and for a second, I saw a flicker of something that wasn't hate. It was pity.
"She’s burning up," Mara said, reaching out to touch my forehead. I flinched, but she didn't pull away. "She’s got the swamp fever starting. If we leave her here, she won’t last the night."
"Mara, no," the scarred man warned. "It’s too risky."
"Look at her, Silas," Mara snapped. "She’s a child. A scared, broken child. Are we the monsters the King says we are? Or are we people?"
