Miram straightened her back and stood up right. "The answer to that is very simple." She walked up to Mia, lowered herself to her height and pressed her mouth close to Mia's ear, "I want you to suffer." Mia's heart sank, "I suggest you make it quick because you never know what will happen in the next few seconds." Miram moved away from her and smiled, "oh I know." Mia looked up at her, "you'll be chained and I'll make you beg and wish that I take your life." A satisfied look adorned her face as she stared into space, "you see Mia, that's the thrill of it."

Miriam gushed. I smirked. “You would be if you didn’t act like you were raised by wolves half the time.” She feigned shock and placed her hands on her chest. I turned to Stephanie. “This is my best friend from childhood, Miriam. Although sometimes she misbehaves and acts like she doesn’t have sense. But that doesn't make me love her any less” Stephanie chuckled, then said, “Ma’am, your food is ready. Should I bring it up?”

His brows furrowed, and I could tell he wanted to say something, but he waited for me to continue. “But,” I went on, my lips twitching slightly, “I wasn’t entirely alone. I had someone by my side just like you had Pa Yiwa. Her name is Miriam.” Miriam—my anchor, my safe place. She had been there through everything, from childhood scrapes to teenage heartbreaks. “Miriam, huh? The one who made your breakfast?” he asked, humming thoughtfully. I nodded. “She’s been with me since I was a kid. She raised me more than my own parents did.”

Max joked and we all laughed out loud. “I’m impressed at how determined you are to make a difference, Miriam,” I said to her. Miriam walked closer to me and fixed my tie. “Is that the kind of woman that you want? A strong and determined woman who is never going to back down until she gets what she wants.”

I didn’t trust my voice not to sound cruel. She reached out, her fingers lightly tracing my hand. “Leo, we haven’t talked properly in days. You barely come home. I just wanted to feel like I still mattered.” I rubbed my temples. “Miriam, not tonight.” “There’s something you need to know,” she interrupted quickly, her tone changing. “It’s about Kiara.” I froze. “What about her?” “It’s about her daughter, Sophia.” My chest tightened. “What about her?” “She’s yours,” Miriam said simply, her eyes glinting with satisfaction beneath the softness.

I asked in a gentle voice, feeling odd speaking too loudly in these echoey walls. "Ma'am?" Miriam asked back, turning her head over her shoulder to look at me. Her voice sounded slightly guarded. "Is there something wrong?" "No," I said with a shake of my head. "I was just wondering... Is it okay if I ask your age?" "Oh," Miriam sighed with what appeared like relief. "I'm twenty-five years of age, ma'am." "That's awfully young," I noted as we continued walking. "How long have you been working as a maid in the palace?"

Seth leaned back in his chair, a grin spreading across his face. “She seems strangely familiar,” he muttered to no one in particular. Then, louder, he added, “Quite a troublemaker, if I’m not mistaken. What was her name again? Ah, yes—Miranda.” Charles—sensing the tension building—interrupted the moment. “Young lady, what’s your name, please?” His voice was polite. Mia straightened her posture, meeting Charles’s gaze with calm professionalism. “My name is Mia. Mia Williams.” Seth’s eyes widened slightly at her name, but his face quickly regained its composure.

There was softness in his expression as he stared at Miriam. Miriam spun back around, holding plates and drinking glasses she'd pulled out of the cabinet in her arms. She leveled a dirty look in Leander's direction. "Eh, don't be telling her that, young pup," she chastised him. Her antics only caused him to grin. Young pup? I was amazed at her familiarity and ease around him. Clearly, he was a monster, didn't she know that? She swiveled her head toward me and muttered, "You may call me Mimi. That's what everyone calls me." Another dirty look shot in Leander's direction.

Mirabelle sat far behind and Mira did the same. “Hi, mom,” Mira said to Mirabelle even though the latter could never hear her. “It’s me, Mira. Your daughter with Ethan. I’m twenty-eight now. I’ve found my mate. His name is Cohen Kingsley. He said you came to visit his pack once. I’m sure if you know him better, you would like him too.”
