Tangled with both father and son
Henry looked from her to me, his slight frown, which I knew didn’t get to his tiny heart, replaced with a small smile and an innocent warmth that only children have.
“Mum… you’re back early. Didn’t you get the job?” Henry asked.
My chest tightened. My lips parted, but words caught in my throat. Before I could find the right answer, Annabella piped up.
“No! How was your first day?” she corrected cheerfully. “Mum wouldn’t be dressed all fancy if she hadn’t gotten the job. Right, Mum?”
Those tiny blue eyes beamed with certainty when they returned to me.
I chuckled softly, drawing them closer, one in each hand, rubbing their cheeks gently.
