People were eating and drinking in merriment. “Mom, can I have a dance with you?” I walked up to where she was talking to someone and asked her politely. “Yes sure”. She drops the glass of wine she was holding and excused herself. We danced to the slow music and smiled at each other. All eyes were on us. My mom smiled beautifully and a few minutes into the dance her smile was turning to a frown like she was in pain. But she tried to keep it together and the pain got worse.

As if on cue, the DJ starts playing Despacito by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee ft Justin Bieber. Maggie becomes shy at first, before she looks around her and sees that no one is paying attention to her. Then she starts dancing like a clown when her lack of confidence fades away. Kids around us sees this and backs away from Maggie with fits of laughter. She suddenly stops dancing and bows her head in embarrassment, while I pull Ver closer to me by the collar and dance with her. My mouth went dry. “Oh, that’s great,” Theo said with a small, unreadable smirk. I met his eyes and felt a cold prickle run down my spine. He was playing with me. “You should have your solo dance. Let’s see if our new Wild Cat can move,” Theo added. The crowd agreed at once. Even Lucas—who I had hoped might save me—didn’t stop it.
