The Blackwood warriors, still recovering from the "Shadow Rot" curse I had been treating, were struggling to shift. The attackers were shadows made flesh—massive, mangy beasts with fur like liquid tar and eyes that glowed a sickly, radioactive yellow. They didn't bite to kill; they bit to infect.

One of those cursed weapons fell with him, and Mikael made a dash for it, barely avoiding another shot from the right side of the room. He stepped into one of the flickering shadows, and Jason did the same, as she watched on with wide eyes. Her own shadow by the door had disappeared when the floodlight went out, and she moved towards the stairs, to the ones they'd created. She could sense them from here, moving in and out of the moving shadows, and she felt a sense of awe. The unique signature of those shadows was continually changing as the light that cast them did, yet they made themselves alike enough to enter them in the blink of an eye, and seemed to change with them.

Finn shifted instantly with a savage snarl, his wolf exploding outward as he slammed into one of the moving shadows. But his claws passed through it. “What the hell?!” Sophie shouted. The shadow twisted around Finn’s arm like smoke before throwing him violently across the ruins. “FINN!” He crashed into one of the stone pillars hard enough to crack it. Garett shifted next. Then Tobias. The entire ruins exploded into chaos. Dark figures poured from between the pillars now, humanoid shapes made entirely from shadow and glowing gold eyes. Not rogues. Not wolves. Something else. Cedric shouted sharply, “Protect Maya!”

“It’s the energy from the ritual. They’re corrupting the land.” Suddenly, a low growl erupted from the shadows. From the darkness, a pack of monstrous creatures emerged, their forms twisted and unnatural. Their fur was patchy, their eyes glowed a blood-red, and black veins pulsed along their bodies. “Shadow beasts!” Eira shouted, readying her crossbow. Rayka drew her blade, her heart pounding. “They’re guarding the ritual site. Hold the line!”

The ghoul which was beginning to land heavy punches on Penelope who was barely conscious stopped and turned its neck three hundred and sixty degrees till it was staring at Harold with dark hollows dug into its head, representing his eyes. It was true what Trisha had guessed. The 'shadows' which they now knew as ghouls had been barely visible down in the cavern. Now they were although smoky, a lot lot easier to spot. It had to do with the full moon.

Roy’s lips brushed against her cheek, and a sigh of relief escaped him. Willow held him tight, her voice hoarse. “Thank God you’re here.” Roy took Willow out of the dark and damp factory. As they reached the door, a silhouette darted out of the shadows from behind. Before they knew it, Roy was knocked to the ground with a sickening thud. Willow watched as blood gushed out of the back of Roy’s head, spilling across the floor. Catherine’s cheek-sunken face emerged as she stared grimacingly at the floor. “That’s what you get for hitting my son.”

Darcy purred, agreeing to that thought. The monster now seeing how Ace grew stepped back a little, calculating how he would attack. Well, Ace didn't give him time because he hurled himself forward, colliding with the monster. They both fell into the lava, the force causing a severe splash and splatter. My shadow enfolded me, shielding me from the splash. I could hear the thing roaring. I opened a little space for me to see, they weren't on the surface of the lava but I could tell they were down there.
