Now that the smoke cleared, the monster jumped to his feet. As soon as the hairy creature ran, a blue light hit him in the center of the back. Murry watched the monster slide on his belly face-first toward the other end of the room. The smell of burning hair and acid blood was released into the air. A blackened hole smoked in the center of the alien's head. The fat one and the young recruit hurtled over Murry's table, still tipped on the side. The two monsters separated and then ducked between cages. Murry angled his head up as a new creature stepped over him.

“This marks the sixth death in two months. The Council has yet to identify the group calling themselves the ‘Rogue Cell,’ led by the mysterious ‘Monster Queen.’ Fear is gripping the Alpha Elite as the killer continues to bypass the most advanced security systems in Nocturna…” I scoffed and muted the screen. "The Monster Queen. What a ridiculous name." "She’s efficient, Kaelen," Silas reminded me. "No DNA. No footprints. Just bodies." The elevator opened to the penthouse of Lord Aaron, a man who had spent his life hoarding riches and looking down on the weak. You like cookies, right? Brownies? I even stole the Head Chef’s secret recipe, so if you don’t come, I’ll eat them all in front of you. Slowly.” I rolled my eyes so hard they almost got stuck. “You all need medical help. This is abduction, by the way.” Riven just smirked, shifting me higher. “You’re not seeing your friends until I fix your pendant, unless you want the entire school gossiping that the Big Bad Monster’s back and ready to bite.”

I say. “Yes, he is,” he shouts “and he’s going to get you too if you don’t watch out.” He throws his notebook on the floor and it opens onto the page he’s been squiggling on. I take a closer look and it’s not scrawlings; he’s drawn some kind of monster, its red eyes seeping through to the last page of the book. I find myself back in the womb, but something doesn’t feel right. The calming interior is leaking its creamy fluid. There’s a loud boom, sounding like a heartbeat. With every second beat, another leak appears. Soon, my protective home will not exist anymore. Then what becomes of me?

“Mom.” I looked back at him. “I’m listening.” He kept his eyes on the ceiling as he asked the next question. “If I say yes, and we do the test with the guards and everything, can the Paper Monster be locked up?” I looked at him lying there, one hand still tucked beneath the pillow where the drawing waited. The night lamp cast the room in a soft amber glow, making the shadows gentler and, somehow, everything feel a little more survivable. "If the test says what I think it says," I said, "there's a lot of paper that changes. And yes. Some of the monsters get locked up."

“I didn’t get the chance to thank you.” Her breath shook. “Thank me? You kissed me without my permission,” she whispered. “You scared me. And now—now you’re here? Why? What do you want from me?” The corner of his mouth tilted, almost amused. “So you know who I am.” “You’re Adriano Greco,” she said, her voice trembling. “The monster people talk about.” He took another step closer. “Monster?” he repeated softly. “That’s what they call me?”

“But still we couldn’t—” “You can say it was luck.” Bullshit, luck’s got nothing on monsters, but I silently listened to the way he sugar-coated it. “Now, I would happily elaborate on the matter if you would come with me and answer a couple of questions to loosen the knots for us. Edward and I think you have the answers to the question we don’t know. So, if you could, in good faith, help us out.” I changed my mind that moment—either a potential enemy or a potential ally. “Help? And regarding what?” I inquired, halting my steps. “Please, come with me.”

"You're a hothead, Nicodra, and a fool." "Untrustworthy," he spits, "unstable... dangerous." "That may be so, but you're the one on your way out," I seethe and plunge the blade into his chest. He yells and coughs until blood spurts from his mouth and trails down his jaw. "It was your mistake-believing you were strong enough." He fights to make words, but the blood clogs his throat. "You're right. We are monsters, but not because we shift into ones, not because the wolf lives inside all of us. What you fear... it's the human."

Tomorrow, we sharpened our knives and counted who remained. Malik’s hand brushed the back of my thigh as he climbed the last rise, possessive, tender, and something darker that promised more. He’d saved me. I had saved Scarlett. And if his eyes held that darker edge a little longer than they should have, if his fingers flexed as though they still felt bone giving under them, I didn’t mind. Let them call me a monster, as I returned in blood-soaked rags once again. Another foe dealt with. The monsters are the ones who lose their children and sit down to cry.
