“The room was enveloped in darkness, there was a sound of droplets hitting the ground, the room smelled like a rotting corpse. There was a tapping on the door like someone was baning in morse code. The sound stopped when a large metal door opened a monster showed up. There was a pounding against the wall and one of the lights flickered on, the light brightened the room. But the people in the room were better off not knowing who put them there, the monster walked closer to the people chained and shackled against the wall. The smile froze on Mable's face, panic flooding her eyes. They never once imagined that I knew about them faking their illnesses. As I looked at their panicked expressions, I couldn't help but sneer inwardly.

On Valentine's Day, I told my boyfriend, Cyrus Medford, that I wanted to break up with him because he's often not at home. He even told me that he was a monster in a survival game and needed to return to the game occasionally just to punish the players. What a joke! As if anyone would believe such far-fetched lies! Even if they were fantasy monsters created by the game developers, I don’t want to lose my remaining humanity and turn into a monster by climbing this damned dungeon. Although subtle, this game really does mess with your mind over time. You start thinking of dying as normal and forget that the people you speak to are actually really intelligent programs because of how life-like they behave.”

I ran through the possibilities in my head. Based on everything I'd observed so far, the monster's kill condition was either three consecutive exchanges in a conversation or agreeing to—or refusing—all of its requests three times in a row. If that was true, then I had a way out. Next time I faced it, I'd follow one pattern: agree once, stay silent once, refuse once. That way, no matter which theory was right, I'd dodge the condition entirely. Of course… if both guesses were wrong, I'd just have to accept my fate.
