MOON OF ASHES
It elongated, gained weight, and slowly, impossibly, shaped itself into a figure.
At first it was only an outline, tall and thin, its edges hazy. Then details resolved: long hair like strands of smoke, skin pale as birch bark, eyes dark and glinting with silver flecks. It was neither wolf nor human but a suggestion of both — a body lithe as a predator’s, hands graceful and claw-tipped.
The hum inside Ava’s head became words, not spoken but heard nonetheless. Child of the Moon. Broken of the curse. You woke the old bond.
