he shouted, staggering back. Aeron darted forward, striking at a second Wraith with precise, rapid blows. Sparks erupted as the creature recoiled slightly, but another strike came from its twin, forcing him to leap back. Luna’s hands glowed brightly, the moons’ energy streaming outward. She projected a web of silver and gold light that wrapped around the molten shards, stabilizing them temporarily. The Wraiths hissed, recoiling as the energy constricted their movements. “Focus the Moonfire into their cores!” Mira shouted. “Their shadows are tethered to the shards! Destabilize the connection!”

Fluffy white wings stretched out of my back and cast a shadow over me, covering me as though they were shields. That wasn’t the problem, though. At the bottom of my wings, there was fire that did not appear to cause me or my cloth any harm. It just burned. In the middle of my head was a crescent moon that glowed. “They are burning,” I heard someone say. “How are they white if she is the demigod of Night and shadows?” Another asked.

My vision spins, but I push myself back up. I can’t stop now. The beast comes at me again. I close my eyes and dig deep. I feel the power inside me…the light, the fire, the part of me that’s growing stronger every day. I let it rise. My body lifts off the ground again, and this time, wings made of silver flames burst from my back. They shimmer like moonlight. I fly straight at the beast, dodging its claws and slamming a ball of fire into its head. It screams and stumbles, but still doesn’t fall.

I can see the faint outline of what looks like wings spread behind her. Wings of fire that seem to take the shape of a heart… A piercing scream rips through the air as her power increases tenfold and surges into the sky, emanating in waves around her. I see the swirls of the flames behind her move before I see a tiny part of her left wing snap and shrivel into embers of ash. It’s too blinding to look at, and I’m forced to avert my gaze.

The thing kept up until it was easy to tell that it was a person. Wings spread from its back stretching out wide. With one movement it used them to blow the flames towards the warriors that were standing too close. Flames engulfed them in minutes and then they were gone. With another great batting the wings stopped the flames altogether and the thing was all that remained. Elaina watched in horror as it began to move forward taking in the scene around it.
