A messenger from the border rushed in, dropping to one knee before Alpha Dean. “My Lord, scouts report movements at the eastern ridge. Not rogues… but a force wearing strange markings we’ve not seen before.” The air grew tense. Alpha Dean’s jaw tightened as he exchanged a look with Loretta. “They dare approach Moonspire now, after their last attempt?” Loretta whispered. Christen rose, despite his ribs still tender. His eyes found Liora’s, steady and resolute. “They’re not here for us, Liora. They’re here for you.”

"Ready to conquer the day?" "Morning, Mark! Always ready for the challenge," I reply, giving him a playful wink. Mark is the guy who always managed to brighten up the office with his witty jokes and shenanigans. You never know what he's going to do next, and that's what makes him so fun to be around. I stroll into the coffee room, eager for a much-needed caffeine boost to kickstart my day. As I approach the coffee machine, I find my colleagues huddled together, whispering and giggling like schoolgirls. My curiosity piqued, I join them with a raised eyebrow.

"I did warn you about crazyville. Dad!" Both of them look up at the sound of his voice. "Good morning, son," Mark greets warmly. Even the chicken on his head turns to look at me. "Oh, apologies," Mark says quickly, just as Ali starts giggling behind her book. "M.C. Clucks loves nesting in my hair. I think it’s my strong aura." With a gentle wave of his hand, the giant chicken flaps to the ground, landing at Mark’s feet with a disgruntled cluck.

I kissed her neck. The next morning, I arrived at the office early, my mind already running through the day’s agenda. As I settled into my chair, I had it in mind not to accept visitors today, and without asking, it was 12 pm, and no one yet, thank goodness, just then Mark knocked on the door and stepped inside. “Hey, Mr. Bloodhound, do you have a minute?” he greeted. “Morning, Mark,” I said. “Come on in. What’s the update? I believe that's why you're here”.

The next week passed in a haze, my thoughts spiraling, still no call from Azrik. One morning, I stood before my mirror, brushing my hair, when my eyes caught something unusual, something that hadn’t changed since the day Azrik marked me. The mark on my neck wasn’t glowing. It flickered, unstable, like a flame fighting to stay alive. My heart pounded. I skipped breakfast. I couldn’t force anything down, when Mira entered I needed clarity. “Mira,” I said, my voice rasping, “if… if a girl has a mate’s mark, and it suddenly becomes… different, like… flickering, what could that mean?”

As she shut her door, the sound of the key turning at the gate made her brace herself for the only person who could be up here at this hour besides her. Mark emerged from the corner, still wearing his shirt from yesterday, his captivating eyes, looking somewhat bloodshot like he hadn't slept all night. 'Maybe he went out again after I saw him last night.' But all she smelled on him was his incredible male scent though. There was no hint of alcohol or tobacco. "Good morning." She greeted. He nodded, eyes moving from her face to the cup in her hand. When he didn't look away from the coffee quick enough, she held it out to him. "Here."

SAMIEN'S POV The cool morning breeze blew against my skin as I rushed forward. Mark stood meters away, his eyes wandering. Something about him felt different, odd. I called after him and watched his head turn towards me. His face seemed to brighten up in a rather strange manner, or so I thought. “Good morning,” he buzzed, managing a smile. “Yess… it's just I don't think there's anything good about the morning.” I let out a sigh, shoulders stooping low..

After waiting for an hour, he returns and crawls into bed with me. When I come to, I yawn and stretch out loud. "You wake me up with your yelling every morning." Mark says, shocking me. "Why are you awake?" I lash out, still dumbfounded and irritated. "Good morning to you as well," you said. He gives me a smirk as he glances across from the book he's reading to me. "Welcome to the morning." I remark icily while rubbing my eyes and rolling them. "Even when you're in a bad mood, you can make me laugh." He says smirking more.

I just closed the journal and tucked it under my pillow. And then I laid there in the quiet. Mark knocked on my door the next afternoon, holding two cups of ramen and a packet of powdered plantain chips. He didn’t even say anything, just dumped the food on my desk and sprawled across my bed. “Thought I’d come cheer up your mopey ass,” he said cheerfully. “I’m not mopey.” “You’re not talking. That’s practically mopey for you.” I sat down beside him and took the ramen. “Thanks.”

The mug was emblazoned with a faded cartoon dinosaur, and the words ‘Rawr Means I Love You. “Thank you,” she replied, wrapping her hands around it. The warmth bled into her palms, chasing away a chill she hadn’t realized she’d carried in. Mark watched all of it with visible relief, like a man who had braced for a storm and found himself instead under a firm roof. His shoulders dropped a full inch. He even let himself smile, just for a second, before remembering he was supposed to be in charge. At noon, Paul struck again.
