The toilet was a different story. Aiden went to his room two doors down. The light fixture was full of dead bugs cast in silhouette; he stood in their oversized shadows, patient as can be. Waiting, at least, was something. It occupied the air. He knew, beyond doubt, that he was here for the correct reason. When you weren’t busy loving, you were busy hating—which was fine, too. It was apathy, that terrible emptiness, which you had to worry about. Nothing killed you like nothingness. Depression lurked at its worst there. Beyond anxiety, beyond sadness so intense you think it will end you. I’m doing the right thing.

I didn't notice when the trembling finally stopped and I just sat there waiting for someone to come. I imagined myself falling into that bottomless pit I always dreamed about, tumbling through darkness with no end in sight. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, the universe always found a way to prove me wrong.
