I giggled to myself and left to drive my way home and dropped Poorna on my way as she asked. The drive will take almost twelve hours. After passing half-way, I got hungry and decided to go for a hunt as I was in the middle of the woods. I changed into my silver white wolf and roamed around to find an apt meal. He thrashed, yelped once, went still. Humans, actual villagers, huddled in doorways and behind overturned carts. A woman clutched two children to her chest, her mouth open in a silent scream. An old man brandished a pitchfork like it might actually do something against claws and fangs. It didn’t. A passing wolf swatted him aside like a doll. He hit the ground hard and didn’t get up. My stomach lurched. This was my opening chapter. I’d written the raid. I’d described the way the alphas circled each other before the first blood was drawn, the way the village elder had begged for mercy and been ignored, the way the moon had hung fat and low like it was watching the slaughter for entertainment.

Chloe's POV The night was cold, something crawled under my skin as I dragged the dead antelope on the floor. I wish I could just take a nap. I just ran so many miles to catch this thing. The moon was full, giving light for me to see where I was headed. There were howling sounds everywhere. Wolves. I stopped in front of my step sister and step mother. Though he was irritated by his mother's actions, he wasn't angry with her. I needed to understand what his mother had meant by a mate. It was so weird and sounded out of this world to me. Usually, a man meets a girl, they fall in love, get married and begin to have children. In her case, she had chosen someone for him because he didn't seem like he was ready, but instead of a wife, she used the word mate. It sounded like something animals do.
