Her eyes shifted to mine as if she knew I was preparing a rebuttal. “Well, that is barbaric and unfair,” I pouted. “Love is complicated, my dear,” my mother frowned. “Why can’t we just love whomever we want?” I asked. “McKenna, you are right. Let me get you some warm milk to calm you,” she offered. “Noooo, finish the story, mama. Please,” I begged again. "Of course, my dear," she nodded. I watched her fetch fresh milk and place it in the round steel to warm it. She did not bother asking again if I would like any. My mother settled back down and continued with her recollection of the story from the beginning of time.

These challenges have shaped my early years, leaving a lasting impact on my self-esteem and academic progress. While I lay in bed, feeling unwell, my mother entered my room with a tray in her hands. On the tray, there was a bowl of hot soup emitting steam and a refreshing glass of water. With utmost care, she placed it on the bedside table and settled down beside me, her eyes filled with worry. The wound looked angry, red and wet and torn, the stitches pulled apart like they’d given up. My stomach turned. My mother inhaled sharply. Then she placed her hand over it. I expected pressure. Pain. Maybe another scolding. Instead, Warmth bloomed beneath her palm. Not the warmth of skin. Something deeper. Something impossible. I sucked in a breath as a soft light flickered from between her fingers. Faint at first. Then brighter. A pale glow poured over my wound like moonlight turned liquid. My eyes widened. My whole body went rigid. “Mum…” I whispered, voice trembling. “What, what is that?”

I spoke in a happy tone, “Mother! We had saved her from the torments of her father. Can we please have her stay in the chambers by my side? She can learn with me how to protect me without a soul to learn of such things!” My mother looked at a timid Camila, who was holding her skirt firmly; she kissed my head and commanded me, “Sit,” I walked to the sofa and then took my seat where I could see them both. Mother had walked to Camila with careful steps. I saw how much Camila was shivering; as my mother let her aura flow towards Camila, the room felt warm; a motherly feeling of some sort was felt. I felt safer, in a way. It was then that I heard my Mother speak again in a motherly way, “Camila,

Chapter 35: The Road to War Morning broke grey and bitter. I had not slept. The letter was tucked against my chest, warm and heavy, a constant reminder of my mother’s love and sacrifice. Can I hug you?” Well, considering I was using her as my pillow for the past three, four hours, I obviously had no problem touching her, I remembered the warmth I felt before opening my eyes and realizing it was her I felt so safe and warm with. Will I still feel it? Or was it gone once I found out it was Kate’s mother I was seeking warmth from?

She said, hiding in her mother's arms. Her mother was hugging her tight, But why was not she moving? She looked up at her mother. "Mama?" She called for her mother. Her mother smiled weakly and kissed her forehead. "My little sunshine, mama always loves you, Baby." Then suddenly, there were lots of sirens and she heard that bad man going away with his car. Suddenly, there were lots of lights and people came. She was scared and tried to clutch to her mother. But, why her mother was not warm anymore? She didn't like it.

JAX: I took her pale hand in mine; her temperature seemed normal, a good sign that life coursed well through her. My mother had surprisingly been waiting for her to wake up. I don't know what she had planned in that conniving head of hers, but she'd be wrong to think her sad methods of motherly manipulation would work.
