Mia brightened immediately, abandoning her complaint in favor of a new strategy. She ran outside to where Duke was checking his tire pressure with the methodical care he brought to everything mechanical.
"Grandpa," she announced. "Tell me about your first motorcycle."
Duke looked up, recognizing the redirect for what it was—Emma's strategic parenting, passed down through Daniel. He almost smiled.
"That's a long story," he said. "You sure you want the whole thing?"
"Yes. All of it."
