THE TWILIGHT COURT Maerwynn’s POV The city emerged like something out of a dream. It clung to the mountains, glowing softly with an otherworldly light. The buildings looked like crystal, impossibly tall and delicate, and the towers shimmered as though spun from the night sky itself. The light wasn’t from the sun—not the kind I knew. This place lived in twilight, where day and night held hands, casting the city in a perpetual, silvery glow. Light veins carved into mountaintops, glowing against the midnight sky. There was beauty here, haunting and fragile.

“Let’s see what we have here.” Waylen flipped through the numerous movies on his TV. I stifled a laugh when he stopped at one. The thumbnail showed a wolf beside a girl and two other guys. I had seen three of them from memes and GIFs. “How about this?” “Twilight?” I asked. “Yeah.” My brows wrinkled. I hadn’t seen the movie, but all the spoilers and snippets on social media made me feel like I had watched it and read the book. “Okay,” I answered, mainly because of his unusual interest in werewolves. He had done so much for me tonight; this was the little I could do to even the balance. He hit play, and I murmured, “Twilight it is, Ezra.”

Making sure to be cautious, Twilight eventually hears the sound of footsteps running. Three… no, four humans? Running away from a horde of husks… Then Twilight hears a scream of pain. “HELP!!! THEY’VE GOT ME!! LUISA! HELP!!” Twilight shakes his head. Three humans left. I should leave them be. It’s safer that way. Then Twilight heard a low-growl beside him. Slowly turning to his left, Twilight saw the bright eyes of his early model. Note to self… prowlers can attract hordes of husks.

Twilight stopped giving out orders to the clones. The clones went into a frenzy and could not tell between friend and foe; they began to attack Twilight. One of them bit Twilight's hand while another bit her neck. Within seconds, she collapsed on the ground. The rest of the clones pounced on her. It was a brutal scene to watch. Everything happened too fast. Before anyone could react, Twilight was lying motionlessly in a puddle of blood. Larissa covered Vincent's eyes and turned her gaze away. The crazed clones continued to attack even after murdering Twilight.

I didn’t want to have a run-in with her when I snuck out. “I don’t want to.” She shook her head. “I won’t go, then.” I smiled at her, making sure to hide any sign of deceit. We spent the entire day binge-watching the Twilight series, just how I liked to spend birthdays. Selena always complained about how the werewolf didn’t get the girl, but it didn’t matter to me. It was Bella’s choice. “Aw, come on. I bet she wouldn’t have suffered this much—” “If she had ended up with Jacob, you say that every single time we reach the birth scene.” I giggled, kissing her cheeks.
