" I don't need telling twice. I run.

I don’t know how I find the strength, but I’m moving before I can register it. I can hear people calling after me, but their words are nothing but whispers. I shuffle through the crowd, rushing out the door, the route I'm going barely visible. Someone taps me on the shoulder, the hand firm, and steadying. “River is driving,” Maddox says, guiding me towards the car. The drive to the northern road is hell. I sit in the passenger seat, staring out at the road like I can make it move faster. It hurts to breathe when she who I now breathe for isn’t here.

I stood in the corridor with students moving past me in both directions and I breathed and felt the bond do its thing, but I ignored it. My mother would have been proud. The thought wasn't kind. I shifted my bag higher on my shoulder and started walking, and the bond walked with me, because that was the nature of it now. It wasn't going anywhere. Neither was I. I had a full day of classes and no intention of falling apart in any of them. I was Maeve Collins. I would figure out the rest later.

Move. I force one foot forward, then another, until I’m sprinting. The world around me becomes a blur of motion and sound—voices rise and fall like a chaotic symphony, the shuffle of shoes against pavement grating against my ears. I shove past people, their startled protests barely registering as the bond pulls me forward, searing my chest like molten fire. It’s a warning, a promise, a curse all at once. If I don’t reach her, if I let her slip away, this fire will consume me.

Meeka whispers urgently, “Slade... this is insane—” I grin at her reassuringly. “You’ll survive. Probably.” “Probably?! Are you crazy?!” Her eyes widen even more. The flag finally drops, and the engines roar to life, smoke billowing from under the tires as we surge forward so quickly that Meeka's words get lost in the rush of wind. “OH MY GOD!” she yells, gripping the side panel tightly. I chuckle quietly and shift gears smoothly. Halfway down the stretch, I calmly say, “Switch in thirty.”

But I can feel it. A direction. A pull. Stronger than before. More focused. “This way,” I say. Adrian doesn’t question it. He just moves with me. Or maybe I move with him. Or maybe we’re both just being carried now. The space around us warps again. The shapes fade. The watching presence recedes. But not entirely. I can still feel it. Still sense its attention lingering. Like it’s not done with us yet. The movement accelerates. Faster.

As I closed my eyes one last time, I made a wish. "If there's a next life, I wish to never meet them again."

She used the gravity-boots to wall-run along the holographic billboards, her crimson suit leaving a trail of "corrupted" light behind her.
