Nimbley I begin climbing, remembering just how I did as a child; Milo’s laughter echoes in my head, a past memory as we used to race each other up the thick trunk, reaching the place we’d sit, just where all the branches spread out.
I observe the tree as I go up, looking for anywhere that something could be hidden beneath. Nothing so far… but I keep going higher, and just when I feel like I’m losing hope, there below our engraved names is a chipped part in the tree. I move closer, slipping my fingers in, ignoring the bugs that scatter out. I feel around, a few splinters digging into my fingertips, and then I feel it, something metal against my fingertips.
