I pointed to Wanda's limp, barely breathing body and shrieked at the top of my lungs, "Have you gone blind, Joseph? Do you not see how Wanda is slipping away here? She's actually going to die if you drag this on any longer!" Ella let out a mocking snicker before yelling, "You think she's just going to die like that, huh? Give me a break! You're quite a team, aren't you? You see, one fakes a medical crisis perfectly, while the other puts on this life-or-death drama! Do you really take us for fools, Yvonne?

Rufus looked to Cain, his brown eyes flicking across his face “They are lies Rufus, they are lies. I should be sat where you are right this instance” “So tell us what happened?” Cain looked to Luca whose face was stony, emotionless. “Well… I was notified of my Beta's death, naturally I was upset. I took my Beta's youngest in so she did not have to live alone. She transformed that day you see… she was scared… scared of what she had done” “And what had she done?”

It was made of the same matte obsidian as Dante’s arm, its single lens glowing with a lethal, indigo light. Leo stepped back, pulling a white pulse-pistol from his belt. "Stay back, Ivy! It’s a Moretti scout!" The drone didn't attack. It hovered inches from my face, its cooling fans whirring like a dying breath. A speaker on the bottom crackled to life.

Jessica hesitated only a second before pulling Aurora toward a crumbled wall. The hum of the drones deepened as their weapons charged, red light flickering. "SUBJECT NON-COMPLIANT", one droned. "FORCE ENGAGEMENT AUTHORIZED". The first blast tore through the concrete beside Romeo. Dust exploded into the air. Jessica screamed. But Romeo was already moving faster tha the machines could track. He spun low, grabbed a broken metal rod, and hurled it with perfect precision. It impaled one drone straight through it's scanner, sending it spiraling in flames.

Earth and weeds appeared in the opening—just wide enough for a person. “Go!” I pushed her toward the hole. “With you,” she shot back. “No time to argue!” I hissed. “Once you’re outside, pull yourself up to the side wall and wait for my signal.” The drone’s hum shifted into a deeper tone. The beam flickered across my body—cold, clinical, like someone tracing circuits with a knife. “At least five seconds to recalibrate,” I counted. “Enough.” Sadira was halfway through the hole when a dark figure moved in the entrance. Mask, armored chest, striped shoulder marking. Not Rodriguez’s men. Professionals. Mercenaries. Or… someone the Nest hired.

It is searching for a heart that shouldn't exist in this city’s register. "Don't move," I say. My voice is flat. "The drone is slaved to the Citadel’s heartbeat. If yours spikes, it fires." Silas blinks. His cybernetic gray eyes flicker. He doesn't remember the drones. He doesn't remember the girl he once guarded in the basement. He only knows that the doors are red and the world is screaming. "Subject identified," the drone’s speaker drones. It is a hollow, synthesized voice that lacks any human inflection. "Unregistered variable detected in Sector One. Initiate extraction."

Enraged, they hurled stones and dirty water at me. "Officer, execute him as soon as possible! We won't feel safe otherwise!" "Damn it–this kind of monster kills, dumps the body, cheats on his wife, and still tries to frame her? He deserves to die!"
