The first drone arrived as a whisper, rotors tuned to slide under hearing; the second came with a camera eye and a mouth made of needles. The pack didn’t need orders to shoot. Muzzle flashes stitched red against the fog. Drones fell like black rain and detonated in small, precise pops that sounded like knuckles cracking. For each one that died, two more slid in the gaps, low and clever, skirting arcs of fire to nibble at cables and cameras. “Blade,” I said. “Already there.”

When the Citadel manor felt that everything was going their way, the Headmaster pulled out one of the Black Order’s newest inventions. With a smirking, cold dominant voice, he spoke on the intercom, “We don’t have any vervain for the vampires, but that doesn’t matter with the use of our new weapon, all of them will kneel.” He declared and soon activated the death drones. The drones flew in every direction. They swarm like flies, hundreds of them looking for a pack of wolves to unleash their deadly silver gas on them.

“Shit.” From the tunnels above and below, the swarm descended. Drones—sleek, silver, endless—poured into the underbelly like locusts loosed from hell. Their glassy eyes burned red with Echo’s final command, each rotor shrieking like a wasp’s wings. Needled limbs glistened with venomous current, dripping sparks that hissed as they touched the steel.

Rain held back, screwing the lid back on the water and waiting to hear what Mist had to say before she let herself panic. “Drones,” Mist replied on a loud exhale. “They’re heat seeking drones, so they don’t just rely on visual location finders, but they’ll also pick up any animal over a hundred pounds.” “Dang, I knew I shouldn’t have had that second meat stick this morning,” Walt joked.
