Freedom was only a few steps away— “Freeze! Police!” I stopped. Flashing red and blue lights surrounded me. Officers pointed their guns. “Drop the weapon!” I looked down at the gun in my hand — the weapon that had destroyed three lives tonight. I dropped it. Cold hands shoved me to the ground. Handcuffs clicked around my wrists. “Brittany Hawthorne,” a voice said — Detective Morrison. “You’re under arrest for the murder of Martin Reeves and other multiple murders, kidnapping and other crimes.”

“I think so. The police combed the island, but they found nothing, and Julie refused to speak about it. I think she’s blocking out the memory.” Murray was absentminded when he nodded, a plan already cooking in his head. “It’s understandable, what she went through was traumatic.” Murray knew he had to find a way to go into Jotham’s house undetected. He’d planted his neckpiece already on Marcus when he killed him; he had to find a way to put the handgun he had used in Jotham’s room. He hadn’t planned to go as far as blaming Jotham for the murder, but time was against him.

A tremor ran through him when he ended the call. "What's wrong?" Jameson inquired, noticing Carl's growing panic. "Mr. Schmidt, terrible news! The police arrested Chief Novak last night. They're charging him with first-degree murder!" Jameson's heart lurched. "First-degree murder? What are you talking about?" "Apparently, someone provided the police with a video. It shows Chief Novak killing the victim after Nathan left. The entire murder is on tape! He has no defense." Jameson's vision swam. A metallic tang filled his mouth as he lurched forward. A crimson spray erupted from his mouth, painting his pale lips a grotesque red. "Mr. Schmidt!" Carl cried out in alarm.

What I saw made me feel sick. There was a picture of my daughter on the screen. The headline read: "POLITICIAN'S DAUGHTER ARRESTED FOR MURDER." The news reporter was talking fast. "Twenty- two-year-old Lilith Morrell, daughter of politician Beatrice Romano, has been arrested for the murder of Jessica Williams. The victim was a maid who worked for the wealthy Lockhart family." I felt like I couldn't breathe. This was happening too fast. "The murder took place at the old pier last night. Police found strong evidence linking Miss Morrell to the crime," the reporter continued.

I could’ve taken down Vaughn Corp anytime I wanted, but that would’ve been too fast. I wanted you to suffer slowly, year after year, never knowing where the next hit was coming from.” There was a knock at the door. The police walked in with the warrant. “Jonathan Walsh, you’re under arrest.” He didn’t fight it. Just held out his hands while they cuffed him, still smiling.

Damien stood and grabbed an attendant who turned the volume up. “For those of you who have just joined us. It has just been confirmed that Victor Worthington, disgraced state district attorney for Chicago committed suicide last night. He was found this morning by his lawyer. Mr Worthington was on bail after being arrested for the murder of his assistant, Gerald Francis. During the investigation into this alleged murder, it has been found that Mr Worthington, who comes from one of Chicago’s most prestigious families, has been embezzling funds and taking bribes during his period as district state attorney.”

“Police have not yet identified the suspect responsible for Mr. Hale’s death. However, authorities believe this was carried out by a well-connected, large group of people. The suspects still remain at large.” The footage shifts again to the abandoned warehouse, now surrounded by police tape and flashing lights. My hand tightens on my mug. I know who did this. I may actually be the sole witness to Victor Hale’s murder and yet here I am, standing in the middle of my living room in my pajamas. Shouldn’t I be going to the police? Shouldn’t I be doing the right thing and turn Nikolai in? I curse internally. I rue the day I approached Nikolai.
