He could smell it in the air, see it all around him and almost taste it on his lips. After roughly two minutes, he got the reward for deciding to follow the path he had taken. The three hostels stood side by side like three giants leading a troop of soldiers to war. The buildings were misty in the distance but from where he was, he knew they were the building he and the other new intakes sought after. He had led them in the right path, he thought. He was sure to be a great Alpha. All he needed do was take care of Harold which his mother was on to already.

It felt like I had died and been brought back to life for a long time. God didn't want me to leave this world just yet. After my conscience met my mother for the first time, I felt a dream. Some supernatural shit like when a hero failed to save the world, they would meet someone who never wants them to give up and gives a second chance. It seemed like forever, but I finally opened my eyes. It was a blur until I focused on the bright light above me. Was this the light that brought me back?

Alaric stood at the edge of the field, arms crossed. His gaze swept over every pair of fighters with cold precision. When he wasn't speaking, his entire presence radiated the kind of Alpha dominance that made everyone tense on instinct. This was Alaric. The hero of the entire werewolf world. The legendary Alpha who'd risen to godlike status in the Vampire War. Every pack revered him. Every enemy retreated at the sound of his name. But my second look landed on his arm. Alaric wore a long-sleeved training shirt. When he raised his right hand to adjust a warrior's stance, his sleeve shifted slightly, revealing a small patch of skin on the inside of his forearm.

"Miss Clara said we could do our hero. I picked mine." Luke exhaled, releasing his shoulders. "You scared me. I thought something was wrong." James beamed and thrust the paper into his hands. "Just read it!" Luke took it out and sat on the couch with James in his lap. The boy squirmed with hardly-contained enthusiasm as Luke read through the messy scrawl and many-colored stars at the top of the paper. He began reading aloud. "My Hero, by James Oden." He cleared his throat, his voice already on the verge of breaking with the first sentence.

After sending the text message to Aunt Gracie, I thanked the policemen who helped me and quickly switched to a different hotel after that. It was only then that my tension finally eased up. I felt my pounding heart slowly calm down after stepping into my new hotel room. A short while later, however, I received a notification on my phone. Randell and Evelyn had made it official and gone public about it. They posted a photo of their hands tightly holding each other under the street lamp, and the accompanying caption said, "You're my hero."
