The Stripping Heiress
Bracing myself, I climbed up the short ladder beside it, sat at the top, and let go.
The slide twisted once, then twice, and spat me out into a small room at the top of the wing.
I pushed myself up, my heart still racing from the speed.
The last library.
It was smaller than the others, the ceiling angled into a sharp pyramid overhead. The shelves only reached my waist, and instead of leather-bound tomes or rare collections, they were filled with children’s books.
I ran my hand along the spines. Dog-eared, faded, read until they were soft. Some titles I recognized from my own childhood, and that made my chest ache in a way I didn’t expect. I wanted to sit, to read, to forget where I was.
