His hand lifted, hovered just inches from the handle. If he turned it , if he stepped inside there’d be no undoing it. Not this time. He could finish what they started. Bury himself so deep inside that mouth, inside that want, that for a few hours, he wouldn’t have to think about betrayal and bloodlines and wedding vows. He could forget. But the thing about monsters was they followed you, even after the lights went out. And Rafael already knew, no matter how hard he tried to kill this thing between them, it wouldn’t stay buried.

SAVANNAH "Mummy!" Sarah yelled before rushing towards me, a laugh escaped my lips as she jumped into my arms. This girl wasn't even acting like a child going through recovery, she was as energetic as anything. "My little pumpkin, how are you?" I put her down and then brushed my hands in her hair with the smile still on my face. She wrapped her hands around my neck, "I am fine, mummy, but I was so bored when you weren't here. I even thought that you weren't going to come" She pouted

"You ungrateful little bitch! We never should have brought you back! You were a curse from the day you were born! A cold, emotionless monster!" There it was. The truth they’d painted over with family photos and forced dinners. A monster. Maybe he was right. "Finally, something we agree on," I said, my voice eerily pleasant. I slammed my palm down on the cheap IKEA coffee table between us. "I am a monster. And monsters eat their young. Get out. Now." The sound wasn't a slam. It was a crack. A spiderweb of fractures erupted from under my hand, racing across the laminated surface. Then, with a groan of surrendering particleboard, the entire table collapsed into a heap of splinters and shame.

I called softly, kneeling by the door. I heard a muffled sob, and when I opened it, their tear-streaked faces broke my heart. They looked so small, huddled together in fear. I reached out, pulling them close. “It’s okay,” I whispered, stroking Luna’s hair. “Everything is okay now.” Luna clung to me, her tiny hands shaking. “Mummy… the monsters…”

I said with a smile as I kiss his forehead. "You promise?" "Yes." "If there was a monster will they eat me?" I chuckled softly, "Sweetie, they will be scared because you're already a brave boy." "I am?" "Of course you are! Didn't daddy Ben tell you how a big not you are now?" Xavier smiles, "Daddy did tell me." "He did, love. So you wouldn't be scared of small monsters." He pouts, "What if they are big monsters in there?" "Then mommy is going to fight them with you."

There were men and women, voices filled with anxiety and fear. Someone reached out to touch me. It wasn't Kael. It was a softer, warmer touch, checking my eyelids, my pulse. Zac lets out a painful scream before fainting, than the monster swallows him whole. This whole time I’m screaming “No” “Noooo” but that doesn’t do anything to stop it. My family is gone, mum, dad, Zac, but wait where is Bethany. I scan the surroundings searching for a sign that Bethany got away but there are no sign. Abruptly I become aware of a low grunting sound that’s coming from the monster. Gradually I spin to face the monster; I stare at it waiting for it to do something when suddenly it speaks

“I didn’t mean to make him disappear.” I knelt beside them, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. “Sometimes monsters need to disappear.” He looked up at me, eyes wet. “Daddy, am I a monster?” That question tore through me more brutally than any wound I’d ever taken. I cupped his face in both hands. “No, Damon. You’re my son. You’re what every monster should fear, okay?” Behind us, the remaining enemies scattered into the forest. The sun finally broke the horizon, spilling gold across the smoking courtyard, turning everything Damon had touched into shimmering light.
