She could only watch in horror as the figure plunged a clawed hand into her mother's chest Rose sobbed as she watched her mother's limp body fall to the ground. She felt powerless, unable to do anything to help the woman who had always been there for her The only thing she could do was cry, her tears falling onto the damp earth beneath her feet. The monster stood there, its red eyes fixed on Rose, a cruel smile spreading across its monstrous face. It raised its claws, ready to strike, and Rose knew that she was powerless to stop it. As Rose closed her eyes, expecting to feel the werewolf's claws tear into her flesh, she heard a sound like a thousand singing bells.

I never believed in monsters until the night my seven-year-old daughter, Lily, refused to sleep. “Daddy, there’s a monster in the basement,” she whispered, clutching her stuffed rabbit so tightly its ears bent. Her eyes were wide, reflecting the nightlight like twin moons. “It talks like you. It knows my name.” I smiled the way parents do—half amusement, half exhaustion. “Sweetheart, there are no monsters. Just old boxes and maybe some spiders. Go back to sleep.”

As we walked, Tommy explained the game to me. “It's called MonsterGo,” he said, pulling out his cell phone. “You open up the app and then monsters pop up on your screen. They can show up anywhere, so you have to run all over town to find them.” Tommy snatched my phone out of my hand and quickly downloaded the game for me. “There, now you can play too,” he said. I shrugged, seeing the game as the perfect opportunity to distract myself from the misery that was job hunting. We ran around the park for a bit and it wasn't long before I caught my first monster. It was called a “Stingly.”

A red haze crawls into my vision as I taste the lawless violence in my mouth. River’s eyes are two twins of fear and panic. I look at the child and the child looks at me. My hair. My face.
