It was as if my mind was a blank canvas. Mrs. Jenkins leaned in, her eyes filled with concern. "Do you remember anything? Anything at all?" she asked, her voice soft and gentle. I closed my eyes, trying to focus on the memories beyond my reach. But it was as if my mind was a blank canvas devoid of any colour or texture. I opened my eyes, feeling a sense of frustration and fear wash over me. Mrs. Jenkins seemed to sense my distress and tried to comfort me. She brought me a glass of water and sat beside me on the bed.

I scratched gently beneath her jaw, "I blanked out twice in a single night" The admission sat badly in my throat because it was true. I had replayed it all night. The sudden feeling that something was being ripped out of my chest. Then nothing. A gap. A complete break in thought. The next thing I remembered was chasing her and after that everything became clear again.

Both were my fault. "And how do I do that? I've never felt this way before." The confession wanted to stick to my teeth and never leave my mouth. But I kept going. "I feel like my mind is snapping, I feel so empty. I don't have anything to fall back on, I don't have a mate, my family is gone! So how am I supposed to be in the right state of mind!" I snapped at the man in front of me. But he was cooly unphased.

The frustration was that I did not know what to do or say to reach him. The silence between us mounted with the passing minutes, a thick fog that refused to lift. I wracked my brain for something to say, something which would bring him back to me, but my mind went completely blank. I was powerless to do anything but stand and watch as he continued drifting away from me.

', I blindly blurted out oblivious of the news yet an unsettling fear crept into my heart. 'Can you just spill out whatever you have in your mind without consuming my time unessentially!!!', he just kept staring at me blankly while my insides were gnawing in panic to know if nothing bad has happened. Hell, nothing should happen to people I love!!! Pray it's nothing that serious, I tried to console my cognitive brain but fooling my own mind isn't feasible. 'Your uh..', he once again hesitated to drop something that I feel like I wouldn't be able to take. But barely holding myself back from withering, I asked anew.

We have not met for a year. Did you have any dreams this past year?" Zach fell silent. He did have dreams. Not just him, but everyone had dreams that were similar. They had dreamt about the things they heard in my thoughts. Winter set the kettle on the stove and poured some cups of coffee. I spoke again, "Mom, there's still a story I haven't finished. Do you want to hear it?"
