She's so damn snoopy. Wait, did she just say neighbours? "Where do you live?" I ask, my heart pounding in complete fear. I hope she doesn't give me the answer that I dread the most. "The house next door." She grins. "We are neighbors. " No! "Trent is going to be so happy that his 'friend' lives just next door." She adds. "I can't wait to share the great news! You should invite us for a housewarming party. Oh, pass. I forgot how dramatic and salty you can get in a party."

“Or maybe it’s the scary neighbor looking into our house again.” I roll my eyes and push her shoulder. “Funny.” Our neighbor is an old man who almost never leaves his house. We usually see him through his windows, sitting in his living room watching television or standing in the kitchen with a drink in his hand. We’ve never really seen him outside. Except once. When he was standing in our garden. Looking into our house. The memory still makes my skin crawl. Zara had grabbed a hammer and stormed outside like a warrior ready for battle, only to discover it was him standing there, blinking at us like he had no idea how he’d ended up there.

Beautiful things are lethal. I squint, peering into eyes of deep, burnished brown that seem to hold a hidden fire within. Flecks of amber dance at the edges, pushing back at the unnerving coldness in them. Thick, black lashes flutter against tanned, golden skin as his gaze narrows at the blood on my flimsy nightdress, and against my better judgement, I blurt, “It isn’t mine.” The man, whom I recognize from yesterday as my neighbor raises his brows as he helps me up to my feet. “Is he dead?”

She knew that this was a close guarded secret and it was only by luck that she found it . “Go ahead, give me the name.” Andres urged. “Stop right there, don’t you dare say anything. This is my secret and I am the only one who will reveal it if I want” “I was just joking because this will be an easy way for you. I am imagining how it will be very difficult for you to tell Andres that you are a useless jerk who never got over a woman who left you and married another. Well…..I don’t like your kind and I hope that our paths will never cross in this lifetime:” Nora said and then turned her back to go out of the house. This place was starting to suffocate her.

"A good neighbor is a present help. If you let my son use this place as his playroom, wouldn't he be just like your grandson? "With the addition of a grandson, you'll have more support later in life. You old fool, how can you not understand this?" I raised the knife and swung it once through the air. "If you don't leave right now, believe me, I'll chop you to pieces." Shirley stepped backward again and again until she finally retreated outside. I slammed the door shut. Her shrill, annoying voice was finally cut off. I'd lived in this apartment for two years, and the neighbors next door changed as often as the seasons.

They didn't sleep around or act crazy. When the neighbors found out what happened to me, they rallied together and organized a fundraiser for me. I didn't have to work three jobs anymore. I slowly learned that real safety didn't come from guns or locked doors. It came from people looking out for each other. In the new neighborhood, Draven made a lot of good friends. I miss him terribly and I'm dying to know how he's doing after he got punched by Charles yesterday. I know I should have told them, said something at least. But something about keeping it a secret thrilled me, to keep going on. The sneaking, the quickies, the short kisses in the hallway, I felt so badass. They thrilled me and brought out my wild side, a side I didn't know I had until I met James. At least for now, my consolation is that Elizabeth understands me, she doesn't support my actions, but I know she understands where I'm coming from. And probably she can speak to Charles, so that he forgives me.
